Tribal Woman: Portrait, 9"x12" Limited edition of 30, Archival Pigment Print (Laali)

$ 150.00

From the series: "I wish I were a Tribal Woman", (fictitious portraits of the collective beauty of women from the tribes of India)'

Laali is 20 years old and from the Dhaneta Jat tribe. Her family lives near Lakhpat, on the periphery of Kutch and Sindh, between India and Pakistan. She comes from a long line of reclusive camel and buffalo herders and whilst she spends most of her time taking care of her elderly grandmother and selling the milk from their buffaloes to the neighboring town's folk, she is particularly talented inart and embroidery. During the very little spare time she has, she embroiders fantastical stories of pastoral life in the desert out of pieces of mirror and colored thread. She has to hide her work from her family though because if she isn't creating traditional embroidered cloth for her dowry, she is admonished for wasting her time. Laali is to be married in 3 months to a man from her community, chosen by her parents. She prays every day that he will be kind and generous to her and her family
