Tribal Woman: Portrait, 9"x12" Limited edition of 30, Archival Pigment Print (Dimu)

$ 150.00

From the series: "I wish I were a Tribal Woman", (fictitious portraits of the collective beauty of women from the tribes of India)'

It is not likely that you will ever meet 23 year old Dimu in person, but if you did, the first thing that would strike you the most would be her beautiful dark eyes and remarkable grace. She is from the Jarawa tribe of the Andaman Islands and lives in a 'chaddha', in the jungles, with a small group of her tribe. Dimu lost her parents and siblings to a devastating outbreak of malaria in early1999 and grew up an orphan. She was taught to gather and hunt for herself by the kindly elders of her tribe. They quickly discovered that Dimu outshone all her peers with her resilience and agility, particularly when it came to scaling tall trees in the quest for fresh honey. She is also a gifted singer and regales her friends with her voice whenever they sit down in a circle to make beautiful necklaces out of fresh flowers, seeds, and leaves. Dimu and her young girlfriends have to be extra vigilant these days, as women from the neighboring 'chaddhas' have been kidnapped and sadly abused and exploited by poachers and outsiders. For now, Dimu is happiest roaming her jungles and beaches, staying far away from the inquisitive eyes of the rest of the world.
